As the author of CAN’T NEVER COULD!, I just LOVE hearing from readers!
Although the subject of this photo (Hazel) was camera-shy, she and her grandmother were contemplating having corn-on-the-cob for supper. However, the little girl thought she’d better decline because she has a loose tooth. Then, she remembered CAN’T NEVER COULD, and brought it out saying “If she can eat corn-on-the-cob without some teeth, I can do it too!” I think the message of CAN’T NEVER COULD “took!”
This is from the grandmother of Avery from beautiful Oxford, MS.
Avery Rose Allen was reading (not posing, as her grandfather is an internationally known artist!)
“She loves the book. It is her bedtime choice when she stays the night. Last night, she said she was going to be like Brandi and listen until she fell asleep. She wants you to know her second grade teacher, Miss Allen, has a saying when a student says “I can’t,” she has taught them to add a word: “I can’t … yet.” And Avery has told the class about “Can’t Never Could.” Mrs. JoeAnn Allen, Grandmother to Avery
I was quite intrigued with this picture and
asked for an explanation.
“Today we talked about some things that Avery had learned to do that she had been scared to do. (Putting her head under water was big in her memory.) Then, she wanted a tea party, and I told her it was her idea so she needed to make it happen. She planned it all … set the table, made the ‘tea,’ but when it came to muffins, she had her ‘CAN’T’ moment. I used the line from the book, and with very little help, she baked the muffins. She was very proud of herself.”
“She invited her old pals, the Worm Brothers, because ‘they acted nice last time,” said JoJo (Avery’s grandmother.) (They are two of Avery’s grandmother’s father’s fake fish bait.) “She always invited her imaginary friend, Leo, to the parties in the past. But at this party, she told me, she was old enough to know he is ‘imaginary,’ but she still likes for him to come. So, he still had a seat at the table.”
they become totally engaged in a book?
